PUT

Hello. I’m Misaki. I’m going to talk about the Power Up Tutorial in School of Contemporary International Studies.

First, students make a based on conversation a set topic that they are given each week. They record their conversations. After, they listen to their recordings, and look for ways they could improve. Finally, they give some corrections and advice from the tutors in the PUT class. This is repeated twice.

Also, unlike Department of British and American studies, there is a exclusive textbook. And, a school hour of the PUT in Department of British and American studies is 45 minutes but a school hour of the PUT in School of Contemporary International Studies is 90 minutes. Like this, there are some differences between the PUT in Department of British and American studies and the PUT in School of Contemporary International Studies.

Japanese festival "YABUSAME"

Tha style of archery has its origins at the beginning of the Kamakura period. Minamoto no Yoritomo became alarmed at the lack of archery skills his samurai had. He organized yabusame as a form of practice.

The use of the bow had been on foot until around the 4th century when elite soldiers took to fighting on houseback with bows and swords. In the 10th century, samurai would have archery duels on houseback. They would ride at each other and try to shoot at least three arows. These duels did not necessarily have to end in death, as long as honor was satisfied. One of the most famous and celebrated incidents of Japanese mounted archery occurred during the Genpei War, an epic struggle for power between the Heike and Genji clans that was to have a major inpact on Japanese culture, society, and politics.

Rideau Canal

The Rideau Canal, also known as the Rideau Waterway. The canal was opened in 1832. The 202 kilometers of the Rideau Canal incorporate sections of the Rideau and Cataraqui rivers, as well as several lakes. About 19 kilometers of the route is man-made. It is the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America, and in 2007, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The construction of the Rideau Canal was proposed shortly after the War of 1812, when there remained a persistent threat of attack by the United State on the British colony of Upper Canada. In this period, the British built a number of other canals as well as a number of forts to impede and deter any future American invasions of Canadian territory. As many as a thousand of the workers died from malaria, other diseases and accidents during blasting.
